King's Lynn and Ipswich ports record largest grain exports Records. (September 2015)

Following extensive levels of investment in facilities, both ports enjoyed the highest tonnage of exports ever in the month of August 2015.

A strong harvest has seen more than 47400 tonnes on behalf of customers including Fengrain and Openfield pass through King's Lynn in August, surpassing the previous record by 715 tonnes. This follows significant investment by ABP and its customers in both storage facilities and handling equipment. As a result of this investment, handling speeds have doubled from 75 tonnes per hour, to 150 tonnes per hour.

At the Port of Ipswich, a record-breaking 119,548 tonnes of grain were exported through Ipswich Grain Terminal and Clarkson Port Services facilities, beating a previous record of 107,400 recorded in August 2003. The increase in grain exports follows a £2.2m investment in the state-of-the-art Orwell Bulk Terminal.

Nidera UK Operations Director Tim Capey said: "Our expansion and investment continues at a rapid rate reflecting the importance of Ipswich Grain Terminal to the region's farmers as a major facility for the export of grain.

"The company is part way through a £1m investment programme. In the last year alone, we've invested over £500,000 in state-of-the-art intake facilities capable of handling 400 tonnes of grain an hour and a 32.5 metre mobile loading elevator to support shipside operations."

ABP Short Sea Ports Director Andrew Harston said: "This impressive performance reaffirms both our commitment to the region and to delivering a high level of customer service. The grain season is only two months in, and we look forward to working with our customers to grow these numbers still further.

"Our investment in the East Anglian ports is continuing to reap benefits. The record numbers we have seen in August are a testament to the roles that ports play in supporting not just the region's farmers but the wider UK economy, and underlines our commitment to keeping Britain trading."

The New Shiploader type SL800-15W was supplied to ABP Kings Lynn by pALM Bulk Solutions Ltd of Ely, Cambridgeshire, the Shiploader design is based on ABP's existing small Shiploaders which have been successful in operation for more than 20 years loading vessels up to 5,000 DWT.

The Shiploader delivered to site in November 2014 was fully assembled in one day and commissioned on the Vessel Alizee with 3000 tonnes of Grain on 21st and 22nd November 2014.

The Ship loader includes a 15.0 m conveyor boom fitted with an 800 mm wide chevron belt designed to handle Grain and similar materials at rate of around 300 tph. Designed with a 3.2 m wide tipping hopper and unique rear sealing system it enables trucks with grain doors to be discharged direct into the hopper which includes safety features like Mesh Grill above the belt, work area spot light and an operator access platform and ladder to enable opening of central opening grain doors.

Drive is from a Deutz D2011L041 diesel engine direct coupled to a Hydraulic pump allowing power output to the belt and also hydraulic cylinders for boom elevation. The engine is fitted within an enclosure providing reduce levels of noise and also to protect the engine from the harsh conditions found in Ports.

The Shiploader boom is enclosed on 3 sides which along with a headchute and heavy duty flexible rubber sock control dust from the point of receiving material from the truck to the discharge to the vessel.

The Complete machine is mounted on a wheeled under gear along with a tail tow frame enabling easy movement on the quay by wheel loader or Fork Lift Truck.
